Every church music leader has probably at one time or another told the heartfelt hymn story behind the song, “It Is Well with My Soul.” Every line of each verse seems to open a window into the relationship that Horatio G. Spafford must have had with his God. Imagine the great loss he must have felt as he received the cable from his wife with only these two words, “Saved alone.” The loss of his four daughters at sea, as the Ville Du Havre was struck and sank, would be more than any man could bear. Yet, in the midst of tragedy, we find no indication that he blamed God. Instead, we find him revealing his innermost thoughts. Thoughts concerning contentment seem to permeate his writings in verse one. Spafford penned these words, “Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well with my soul.”
